The Butterfly Pavilion

Story + Photos by Rebecca Nolan of Underhill Imagery

This amazing facility is no secret to the nature-loving community, and we’ve all heard of Rosie the Tarantula at some point in our lives. Many Coloradoans already know Butterfly Pavilion hosts a wide array of community events, such as the Beekeeping Bootcamp, where attendees learn from beekeeping experts the skills required to start and maintain healthy beehives, and Rainforest yoga, an hour-long class surrounded by exotic plants, other yoga lovers, and of course, butterflies. But very few people, including myself, knew that they have the ability to host events, including – you guessed it – Weddings.

Their Mission

The Butterfly Pavilion’s mission is to foster an appreciation of invertebrates by educating the public about the need to protect and care for threatened habitats globally while researching solutions for invertebrate conservation. For them to also be passionate about “being there for you through life’s greatest milestones goes beyond one day’s worth of magic” articulates their own Russ Pecoraro. Overall, it’s a mission we can all get on board.

Unique Event Space with Butterflies as Guests

Butterfly Pavilion can host 120 guests surrounding the outdoor gazebo for your ceremony and/or their indoor rental space for your reception. However, this facility can also accommodate smaller groups of up to 40 within the butterfly conservatory. Those who choose to host their ceremony within the conservatory can expect over 1,600 fluttering guests to attend and witness their “I Do’s. Either way, couples and their photographers can create magical portraits through private access once all visitors have left—and you didn’t have to fly to Tahiti to do it! The staff at the Butterfly Pavilion are all about creating a memorable experience. No event is alike, and they feel honored to be able to host such a remarkable time in their couple’s lives.

Westminster may not be the first city you think of when planning your wedding. Still, the facility is conveniently located just off the Denver Boulder Turnpike and 104th for a quick and easy drive for everyone to attend. Surrounded by hotels like The Westin Westminster and restaurants like BJs Brewhouse, and sitting just across the street from Westminster City Park, there’s no limit to your wedding experience.

How Far They’ve Come & What’s Next

As the first Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)-accredited, stand-alone, non-profit invertebrate zoo globally, the Butterfly Pavilion helps protect invertebrates by providing hands-on education and experiences through their exhibits and specialized programs are something to celebrate. Founded in 1990, they are primarily funded through admission sales, community support, and grants from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District, which is no small feat. But what’s even more spectacular is that they intend to grow. For example, a new 81,000-square-foot, five-story facility in Broomfield is scheduled to break ground in 2024, allowing for larger-scale efforts of outreach and education and a new event space that will overlook an even larger butterfly conservatory.

Why You Can Feel Good About Hosting Your Event Here

The Butterfly Pavilion utilizes a carefully selected preferred vendor list and only works with vendors who follow sustainable food sourcing and equipment to ensure couples have the best experience possible. By hosting a wedding at the Butterfly Pavilion, you’re helping support local and global conservation efforts, including:

  • Restoring open space and pollinator habitats
  • Helping fund the Butterfly House in Sumatra to protect and re-establish the Rhino species found there
  • Funding the re-habitation and protection of threatened species in Mongolia
  • Supporting the introduction of honeybees to solve the human-elephant conflict by protecting villages in Tanzania

Whether you choose to host because of wanting your guests to enjoy butterflies or to make a difference in the nature community, the Butterfly Pavilion is a fantastic choice. Unique doesn’t even begin to describe the experience you and your guests will have.
